Botanical Garden UPJŠ was founded in 1950 in Košice in the area of dolný Bankov on the locality Červený breh. When it was set up, it spread over 36 hectares and had 2400 m2 of heated glazed buildings. Since its establishment, its professional focus, structure, material and technical background have been formed several times. Since 1959 it has become a part of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik and in its organizational structure it is a scientific and pedagogical university workplace.
In the area of BZ UPJŠ there are expositions of tropical and subtropical vegetation in warm exposition greenhouses with an area of 3500 m2, on the area of 4 ha there is an exposition of decorative flora. Part of this exposition (2 ha) consists of Ecological educational area (currently before the completion of construction). On the area of 4 acres is located a gene pool collection of autochthonous taxa of higher plants. The area of 24 ha covers the forest part of BZ UPJŠ, which consists of forest units of original phytocoenoses connected to forest communities of the geomorphological units of Bankova and Čermeľské údolie (eastern part of Slovenské Rudohorie)
BG UPJŠ concentrates its activities in the field of educational, research and cultural - social. In educational activities, it creates conditions for laboratory exercises and, on request, provides instruction at the Faculty of Science, UPJŠ in the fields of geobotany, plant ecology, environmental protection and field excursions. Students of botanical disciplines, under the leadership of BZ UPJŠ employees, have the opportunity to do their diploma theses and consult botanical problems. In cooperation with the Leisure Center, she actively participates in organizing competitions such as Biological Olympiad, Know and Protect, Secondary School Professional Activities.
Scientific research BG UPJŠ is focused on the study of biology of endangered species of higher plants in eastern Slovakia, synanthropisation of vegetation, plant invasion, breeding of decorative cultivars and pathological problems of woody plants in changed environmental conditions.
Activities in the area of culture and society are oriented towards making the plant collection accessible, presenting the biodiversity of the plant kingdom, raising and strengthening the environmental awareness of visitors to sustainability and environmental protection.
